Australian Shepherds probably came from somewhere else. A study published in 2013 found that the dog probably originated in the Basque region of southern France, where people still keep sheep. The Basques brought their dogs with them to Spain and then to Australia, so Australians call the dogs Australian Shepherds. But the American Kennel Club says the breed was developed entirely in the United States.
